NOA Board of Directors Meeting
January 10th, 2001

Meeting Minutes

President Peter King called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.

Motion to accept previous meeting minutes – Andy Harlfinger, 2nd – Paul Kaufmann.

Balance as of 1/10/2001 - $5,385.27

Assignment Chairmen Reports

A) Football – Bob Brown

Because of low membership, everyone should be prepared to work doubleheaders this upcoming season.
Reports of having only 9 sophomore crews in the entire Chicago area.

B) Basketball – Bob Brown
Pending approval from the principals, most conferences will go with 3-person officiating crews next season for boys and girls.
Encourages partnering into three person crews.

C) Baseball – Dave Lang
Asking everyone to be on the lookout for baseball officials.
All officials have paid.

NOA will no longer be umpiring Carmel High School baseball games. Carmel is going with Fox Valley umpires.

Sport
President Reports

Football – Paul Kaufmann

Good attendance at meetings during the year averaging 30-32 people.
Discussed concerned over some schools paying late.
Trying to encourage schools to go with voucher payment systems.
All board members agreed that we need to evaluate the mechanisms for compensation to find ways to get paid in a shorter and more acceptable timeframe.
Paul will contact Mundelein to see about moving football meetings to their location

Basketball – Don Swanson

Reported strong attendance at meetings with average headcount of 35 members per meeting
Had discussions regarding establishing a meeting attendance requirement for members. Will discuss further.
Stressed the importance of three man mechanics in light of several conferences going with three officials next season.

Baseball – John Rottman

Proud to report that baseball umpires missed a total of 1 game last season.

Announced that Dave Lang would be assuming the role of assignment chairman.

Membership Chairman Report – Randy Steen

Submitted list of potential new members.
Discussed setting up a committee to write a grant proposal to IHSA. Money received could be put towards recruiting new members, training videos or mentoring. Peter King will follow-up with the IHSA to get more information. Paul Kaufmann volunteered to write the grant proposal.
Dave Gannaway is asking each association to send him a list of potential certified clinicians. NOA will send a list of three clinicians per sport. Each league president will provide a candidate list of 4-5 names to Randy by the end of January.
Top 15 list – Discussed different criteria for establishing a ranking system. This list submitted will be one additional piece of information to use to determine the officials for the state tournament.
Various individuals from the three sports will get together before the next meeting to develop a criteria for selecting individuals to the top 15 list.

I.A.C.A.O Report – Jim Bernardi

Greg Buckner is the new President
Both baseball/softball and football reported the best attendance ever. Basketball also reported outstanding attendance.
Presently looking for a person to take over running the football clinic.
Have been active recruiting members.

Banquet Committee – Paul Kaufmann

Looking at a location in Ingleside (Parkside Club) for the NOA Spring Banquet.
Date selected is Saturday, April 28th in the evening.
Rate for Saturday is $15.95 per person.

No speaker is scheduled.

Old Business

Officials will not be considered a member of the association if they have not paid their dues.
Mentoring Program – Rocky Nelson reported that it has gotten off to a slow start, but that we will continue to use.

New Business

What constitutes being granted lifetime membership in the NOA – must have been a long-standing member who is not presently officiating.
I.A.C.A.O. is collecting old football shirts. Let Jim Bernardi know if you have some.

 

Next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 19th at Hackney’s in Lake Zurich.
