BOARD OF DIRECTORS - MEETING JUNE 19, 2001

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Peter King, General Chairman, at Hackney's Restaurant in Lake Zurich. Board members present were Peter King, Tom Kinkelaar, Randy Steen, Bob Brown, Mark Thompson, Don Swanson, Rocky Nelson, Kent Desormey, Jim Bernardi, Andy Harlfinger, Fred Swanson, and John Widmayer.

SECRETARY'S REPORT

The minutes of the January 10, 2001 Board of Directors Meeting were given to Board members and were reviewed by Peter King in the absence of Troy Whalen. The most recent Whistling Zebra was published and sent out in April. The next Zebra will be published and sent out in late July to kick off the 2001/2002 season. All the newsletters are now available on our web site and accessible at any time by members.

TREASURER'S REPORT

Tom Kinkelaar indicated we will have more money in the treasury when the year ends July 31 mainly due to the low expense of the banquet. We have continued to drop in membership in all three sports, averaging in the 80s for football and basketball and the 40s for baseball. This trend also matches the one the state has been experiencing this year. Fortunately, due to to the low turnout at the banquet, we will have a higher final balance on July 31, 2001 as we did on July 31, 2000, approximately $2,000+. A detailed summary of the fiscal year will be sent to all members during July.

FOOTBALL PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Paul Kaufmann, Football President, was unable to be present but copies of his fall schedule were available with the first meeting scheduled for August 8. Paul indicted to Peter King that he could not get Carmel High School until August 15, so the first meeting will be held at Ivy Hall School in Buffalo Grove. The overall meeting schedule was considered quite appropriate, as was the agenda for each weekly meeting. After the August 8th meeting and the following weekΉs IHSA rules meetings, the August 22nd and all subsequent meeting will be held at Carmel High School.

BASKETBALL PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Don Swanson, President, said this past season was very good and attendance averaged about 40 members. Each meeting was quite lively and discussions were in depth amongst members. The first meeting next fall will be October 10, the week after the combined NOA/AOS dinner on October 3. Don said he was planning same number of meetings and stressing regular attendance for members. The meetings may also be moved to a larger room due to big attendance nights. He also hoped the mentorship program would be more accepted by the members next year, after its development and implementation in the 2000/2001 season.

BASEBALL PRESIDENT'S REPORT

John Rottman, the Baseball President, was not present and no report was given. The meetings started in February and ran through the middle of April this past year and were held at Mundelein High School. It was shared with he Board that Dave Lang is now both the spring Assignment Chairman and the assignor for summer baseball.

MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

Randy Steen presented a detailed report on the success of the membership program and also the grant the group received from the IHSA. He explained how the funds would be spent after some changes in the original grant. The NOA received only a portion of the request; $300 vs. $500. Randy has also been aggressive in securing the names of new members in the area in the NOAΉs three sports. He has sent out updated flyers, contacted officials buy phone, and has checked with the state on potential officials. Randy will be doing even more recruiting come this fall.

ASSIGNMENT CHAIRMEN'S REPORT

Bob Brown said that this is the quiet time for his assigning purposes in football and basketball. He did indicated, though, that because of a lack of officials, more veterans will be asked to work freshman and sophomore games this season. He also indicate that the Fox Valley League will now be paying the same game fees as the other conferences this year. Bob will be sending flyers out in August and will return to assigning games then when additional schedules are completed. Dave Lang was not present to give a report on spring or the upcoming summer season.

I.A.C.A.O. REPORT

Jim Bernardi said the the IACAO Football Clinic is scheduled for August 11th at Naperville North High School. The 2nd Annual IHSA summer officialsΉ clinic will be held in Peoria on July 20th and 21st and will emphasize recruiting, assisting local officiating associations and training, a review of playoff selection rating system for officials, and an update on the top 15 officials list program for the state.

BANQUET COMMITTEE'S REPORT

Peter King and Jim Bernardi reported that the banquetΉs new location was excellent and that the food and bar were well received by members. Unfortunately, only 42 members attended this yearsΉ get-together. Peter King directed each sport president to discuss the pros and cons of the banquet with their respective groups this year. The Board of Directors will make a final recommendation at the January 2002 Board meeting on whether or not to continue the April awards and dinner. Paul Kaufmann recommended that we should publicize the banquet earlier in the year and should send out a separate flyer indicating its importance.

OLD BUSINESS

Discussion centered on members who were late payers and non payers. This continuing problem takes too much of Tom KinkelaarΉs time and effort and sets a bad example for our group. After many options were talked about, it was recommended that dues for the entire year be collected in the prior spring in order to satisfy the state requirement for rosters to be publicized and submitted to them in May, The sports presidents will survey and discuss with their groups this new proposed policy, secure any
