BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING JANUARY 18, 2006

Call to order-The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm at Hackney’s in Lake Zurich. Those in attendance were: Tim Robbins, Ron Guy, Michael Roseman, Bob Brown, Rocky Nelson, Randy Steen, Peter King, Steve Gibble, Tom Vogan, Mike Babicz, John Widmayer, Patrick Murphy, and Jerry Blum.

Steve Gibble and Patrick Murphy were welcomed as new board members. Steve and Patrick are the new at large members in Basketball and Football respectively.

Approval of minutes for June 8, 2005-Tom Vogan moved to accept the minutes of our last Board meeting and Mike Babicz seconded. The minutes were approved unanimously.

Treasurer’s report-Randy Steen told us the balance in our account was at $8680.07 as of tonight.
-The IHSA is adding a new category in the Power Ratings. You will get 2pts. For attending a Level I clinic and 5 pts. For a level 2 clinic.
-Harry Bohn sent letter requesting a donation for the Hospitality Room at the boys State Tournament. Randy said we have donated $100.00 in the past and have been recognized as a contributor on the thank you banner. Bob Brown made a motion to donate $100.00 again this year and Rocky seconded the motion.
-Randy mentioned a letter he got from NASO. Cost is $99.00 to be able to connect to their web site and be able to purchase materials at reduced cost. Randy will check out other benefits and report back. Motion to join was made by Mike Babicz and seconded by Jerry Blum.

 Secretary’s Report-Jerry Blum reported that the Mentoring program was off to a good start. There are some things which will be worked on to improve it for next year.
-We discussed sending out the newsletter via e-mail starting with the first edition next year. It was suggested to send each member an e-mail when the newsletter was posted on the website. A link to the website would be provided in the e-mail. Randy made the motion and Bob seconded it to put the newsletter on the website and alert members by e-mail. The motion was passed unanimously.

Membership Chairman’s Report-Mike Roseman said membership for 2004 was at 195 and in 2005 we stand at 154. Ideas were discussed as to how to bring membership back up in all sports.

Assignment Chairman’s Reports-

Football-Bob Brown said that the scheduling meeting for the 2006 season has been completed.
-Each NOA crew worked at least one round of the playoffs.
-He is still looking for more officials.

Basketball- Mike Babicz said the Quentin Rd. Tournament went off without a hitch.
-Jerry Heidlauf was pleased with NOA Officials.
-Bob Brown and Jerry Heidlauf use the availability from the electronic sites, John Dacy does not like them.

Baseball-Ron Guy said Steve Taylor is getting schedules together and is almost ready to start assigning.

Presidents’ Reports

Football-Mike Babicz said the average attendance at the football meetings was about 20 per meeting.
-Congratulations to Peter King and his crew for working the5A Championship Game.

Basketball-Rocky Nelson said the BB meetings averaged about 40 per meeting.
-Next year he plans on starting meetings ½ hour early for newer officials to cover situations specific to them.

Baseball-Ron Guy told us that Gordie Mason passed away.
-The average attendance was about 6 per meeting.
-The rules Interpretation Meeting will be back at Libertyville H. S. this spring.

IACAO-The IACAO Basketball Clinic was the largest they have ever hosted with over 400 in attendance. Hoffman Estates H. S. and Wayne Boeckelman did a great job.

Banquet Committee Report-The Banquet will be held on April 29, 2006 in Ingelside, with cocktails at 7pm and dinner at 8pm. The setup will be the same as last year. We will again invite IHSA personnel and Assignment Chairman.

Norm Geske Fund-Peter King-BGHS will contact Peter about the winner and a check will be made out to that student’s college. A reminder was given that donations to the fund will be accepted.

Bob Brown Fund-Randy Steen- Balance of the fund is at $1774.00. This is a $1000.00 scholarship given to a student from District 155.
-The NOA contributes $250.00 annually.
-Contributions are always accepted.
-Checks are made out to the student’s college.

Keith Ryan Scholarship-Mike Babicz-Nominee for the Lake county hall of fame is Fred Swanson motion by Peter King seconded by Mike Babicz.
-The question was raised should the NOA help financially to sponsor this event. 

Lifetime Members-Must be retired and have been an NOA member
-Nominees are John Rottman, Colin Griegg, and Mike Briggs. A motion was made by Peter and seconded by John Widmayer to have all three become Lifetime Members.

Old Business-
-Official of the Year should be awarded from each sport.
-It can be awarded to the same official more then once.
-The spirit of the award is to try and give it to different officials.

Changes to Constitution-Vote at the Banquet for any changes.
-changes on the website
-Vote for sport assignors
-Board positions- Bob Brown will be the Nominating Committee Chairman.
-Nominees should send names to Bob by March 10, 2006
-if you can’t make the Banquet contact Jerry Blum

2006-2007 meeting site-both Mundelein and Carmel H. S. will be contacted about facilities
for our meetings. Peter and Rocky will contact the school.

Officials Conference Peoria-We will need two Representatives to go.
-Rocky made a motion to give each rep. $100.00 to defray the cost of attendance. The motion was seconded by Peter, and passed with a unanimous vote.

Injured Officials- What happens to ratings if an official is injured and can’t work part or all of a season. How can this official be helped because of a lack of ratings from a previous year?

New Business-NOA social events to help boost membership and participation. Would a Golf Outing be a good idea?
-Mike Roseman suggested increasing the NOA contribution from $250.00 to $500.00 to the Bob Brown Fund.
-A discussion was held on the idea of a raffle at the Banquet to raise money for all of our funds.
-Donations will be solicited in the newsletter for the raffle.
-Mike Rose Award (for school official or coach)-Len Chimino was nominated by Bob Brown and seconded by Patrck Murphy and passed by a unanimous vote.
-George Young Award- Football should discuss and decide.
-More Board meetings? It was decided to add a third Board meeting make sure nothing falls through the cracks when meetings are every six months. The decision was made to meet the third Monday in May, September and January.
-The NOA will host and find a speaker for the annual NOA-AOS Dinner.
-Bob Brown will try to get the NISOC committee to come to the NOA-AOS meeting.
